I started by selecting things that I love or that I'm drawn to, and then went back to find the common thread. It’s how I determine the language of a project and what fuses all the pieces together. No one can mix various styles and pieces from different eras the way he does! Plus, he’s a bit of a neutrals guy, and that speaks directly to me.

I can’t say that one particular project comes to mind; each is vastly different from the next in its own unique way, and that’s what I love so much about this job! Having to constantly flip the script — moving from a dark, masculine bachelor pad one minute to a soft, feminine nursery the next really keeps you on your toes. So, I will say that starting out and having a job built on nothing but gut instinct was a bit of an obstacle, something that I struggled with every day.

I love vintage tables, be it a coffee table, an end table, a little drink table... You can prop your feet up, set your drink down, or drop your mail when you walk through the door. You get so much patina from the wear and tear, and that’s what helps tell a story. I also love old miscellaneous accent chairs sprinkled in, but for daily comfort and use, you need new upholstery.

I was able to attend his store opening in Washington, D.C., a few years back, and he was kind enough to go to dinner with me afterward and provide a few words of wisdom — words that I’ve held onto ever since! The homeowner bought the four-bedroom, four-bathroom place with the intention of making it his forever home. For several years, he has collected antiques for it but wanted a refresh.
